Aluminum wire production workshop, aluminum wire for sale

Aluminum plate applications

Aluminum Plate is used in heavy-duty applications such as those found in the aerospace, military and transportation product manufacturing. Aluminum plate, machined to shape, forms the skins of jets and spacecraft fuel tanks. It is used for storage tanks in many industries, in part because some aluminum alloys become tougher at supercold temperatures. This property is especially useful in holding cryogenic (very-low-temperature) materials. Aluminum Plate is also used to manufacture structural sections for railcars and ships, as well as armor for military vehicles.

Producing aluminum plate - Aluminum Plate and Sheet

Producing aluminum plate - Aluminum Plate and Sheet

Aluminum rolling begins with preheated aluminum sheet ingots that can weigh more than 20 tons. As the size of rolling mills has increased, so has the size of these aluminum ingots, but a typical aluminum ingot is approximately 6 feet wide, 20 feet long and more than 2 feet thick.
The aluminum ingot is first heated to rolling temperature and fed into a breakdown mill, where it is rolled back and forth until the thickness has been reduced to just a few inches.
The slab can be subsequently cold rolled or may be heat-treated to increase its strength. The highest strength aluminum alloys are heat treated and rapidly cooled to room temperature, after which they are stretched to straighten and relieve internal stress built up during rolling and heat-treating. They are aged naturally at room temperature or artificially aged in a furnace to develop the desired combination of strength and corrosion resistance.
Finally, the aluminum plate is trimmed to final size. Aluminum Plates produced in this manner may be used at full thickness, but are often machined into a variety of simple to complex shapes.

Aluminum Sheet and Plate

When aluminum is passed between rolls under pressure, it becomes thinner and longer in the direction in which it is moving. This simple process is the basis for producing aluminum plate, sheet and foil. Sheet, the most widely used form of industrial aluminum, is used in applications including aerospace (the skins of planes), transportation (auto body sheet), packaging (can bodies and ends) and construction (building facades).

Take-Away Facts
  • Sheet and plate can be recycled continuously
Aluminum sheet and plate can be recycled continuously without loss of properties. Recycling sheet and plate aluminum saves more than 90 percent of the energy otherwise required to produce primary aluminum.
  • Highest performance standards in armor
Military-grade aluminum armor plate meets the U.S. military’s highest performance standards. Aluminum armor can deflect a .50-caliber round that would pierce other materials.
  • The "gauge" of aluminum sheet and foil
Aluminum from 0.008 inches to less than 0.25 inches thick is considered sheet. Thinner aluminum is foil and aluminum 0.250 inches and thicker is plate.
  • The colder, the stronger
Aluminum plate is used for storage tanks in many industries in part because some aluminum alloys gain strength at super cold temperatures.

The History of Aluminum Foil

aluminum foil for medicine packaging
The earliest production of aluminum foil occurred in France in 1903. In 1911, Bern, Switzerland–based Tobler began wrapping its chocolate bars in foil. Their unique triangular bar, Toblerone, is still widely available today. Production of aluminum foil in the United States started in 1913.

The first commercial use: aluminum package: packaging Life Savers into their now world-famous shiny metal tube. The demand for aluminum foil skyrocketed during World War II. Early military applications included the use of foil strips, dropped from bombers, to confuse and misguide radar tracking systems.

Aluminum foil was so vital to the defense effort that families were encouraged to save strips of foil. In many towns, the collected foil balls could be exchanged for free entry to a movie theater. One of the most innovative uses of aluminum foil came in the early 1960s. The aluminum Christmas tree debuted—complete with foil-covered branches and decorations.

Why Foil Is Shiny on One Side

Aluminum foil has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side is produced when the aluminum is rolled during the final pass. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to roll a single sheet of foil. For the final pass, two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the roll. When the aluminum sheets are later separated, the two inside surfaces are matte, and the two outside surfaces are shiny.

Simple Introduction of Aluminium foil, aluminum foil for sale

a roll of aluminum foil
Aluminium foil (or aluminum foil), often referred to as tin foil, is aluminium prepared in thin metal leaves with a thickness less than 0.2 mm (7.9 mils); thinner gauges down to 6 micrometers (0.24 mils) are also commonly used. In the United States, foils are commonly gauged in thousandths of an inch or mils. Standard household foil is typically 0.016 mm (0.63 mils) thick, and heavy duty household foil is typically 0.024 mm (0.94 mils). The foil is pliable, and can be readily bent or wrapped around objects. Thin foils are fragile and are sometimes laminated to other materials such as plastics or aluminum foil paper to make them more useful. Aluminium foil supplanted tin foil in the mid 20th century.

Annual production of aluminium foil was approximately 800,000 tonnes (880,000 tons) in Europe and 600,000 tonnes (660,000 tons) in the U.S. in 2003. Approximately 75% of aluminium foil is used for packaging of foods, cosmetics, and chemical products, and 25% used for industrial applications (e.g. thermal insulation, cables and electronics).

In North America, aluminium foil is known as aluminum foil. It was popularized by Reynolds Metals, the leading manufacturer in North America. In the United Kingdom and United States it is, informally, widely called tin foil, for historical reasons (similar to how aluminum cans are often still called "tin cans").Metallised films are sometimes mistaken for aluminium foil, but are actually polymer films coated with a thin layer of aluminium. In Australia, aluminium foil is widely called alfoil.
